Okay, now this... this pisses me off.

Houston, TX police officer killed by illegal immigrant, who had already been deported for child molestation before.

( My, we seem to be a little short on brotherly love round here. )

I have absolutely nothing against anyone who wishes to come to this country, and try to make a better future for themselves and their family. I think we waste a serious amount of our time and taxpayer money handling immigration the way we currently do. I believe that every illegal immigrant in this country should have their case reviewed and heard by a judge, and then either be granted temporary visas or be deported due to just cause. The reason that immigration has been and will continue to be a problem is that it provides a cheap, nontaxable labor force. Go after those companies who continue to profit from it, and the demand will dry itself up.

However, when someone has already BEEN convicted of a crime of moral turpitude, has had their immigration status revoked accordingly, and has been forcibly removed and deported back to their country of origin, they need to fucking STAY there. And it is our responsibility as a nation to enforce our own laws that are there in protection of its citizens. As the police chief pointed out, yeah, the officer pretty clearly screwed the pooch in not catching the fact that Pedro there still had a weapon, and unfortunately paid with his life. But had the suspect NOT been able to so easily flout our laws and sneak back into this country, that officer would likely still be alive today.

It's motherfucking bullshit, and thus far, I see no action by either political party to actually do a single fucking thing about it.

As several folks already know, I'm not originally from Georgia, so this isn't as personal of an issue as some people here seem to take it. Being in raised in Texas, and especially with our own history, the Civil War and the Confederacy had a much different meaning to me. The problem, which seems to continue to this day and age, was not so much over the fact that the states seceded from the Union, but the reasons WHY they chose to do so, and the resulting turmoil.

( It is well that war is so terrible... or we should grow too fond of it. )

So... while I can admire and respect several of the reasons for the creation of the Confederacy, I personally could never support or value any measure that continues to breathe life into its long-dead corpse. This is not a heritage that I honestly think anyone would truly want to be remembered for, nor is it something that I personally want representing me as the symbol of this state. The leaders of the Confederation, and Mr. Jefferson Davis, each had their own chance to stand up and put their mark on history by untangling the fight over slave rights from their drive for independence.

They chose not to, and paid for the consequences. There is absolutely nothing to memorialize them for regarding freedom and liberty.
